Zimbabwe Elections Most Fraudulent in the Region-SADC

Southern Africa Development Community Observer Mission Raises Concerns Over Zimbabwean Elections. The head of the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Election Observer Mission, Nevers Mumba, has voiced serious concerns about the recent Zimbabwean elections, describing them as deeply flawed and lacking transparency. In a candid interview with a Zambian television station, Mumba asserted that these elections were the most fraudulent in the history of the SADC region.

While Mumba acknowledged President Emmerson Mnangagwa's inauguration, he underscored the need to address the glaring irregularities that marred the electoral process. He warned against turning a blind eye to the situation in Africa, noting that coups and political upheaval often begin with contentious elections and desperate leadership.

Mumba called upon Zimbabwe to demonstrate its commitment to the SADC principles and work toward rectifying these issues. One of the chief concerns raised by Mumba was the prevalence of irregularities, including voter disenfranchisement and intimidation tactics. He emphasized that such reports were unusual within the SADC region and urged a proactive approach to ensure free and fair elections throughout the region. Mumba stressed that failing to uphold these democratic principles could lead to more significant problems, including political instability.

Mumba also addressed the controversy surrounding the SADC report on the Zimbabwean elections. He condemned attacks on his mission by some Zimbabwean citizens on social media who alleged bias in the report. In response, Mumba called for those with objections to take the legal route to address their concerns. He vehemently defended the integrity and impartiality of the SADC mission, asserting that they were committed to justice and fairness, not influenced by Western interests.Furthermore, Mumba clarified the role of the SADC mission, emphasizing that they do not choose leaders for Zimbabwean citizens; rather, Zimbabweans themselves have the right to make that choice. He urged Zimbabwe to challenge the report if they believed it was erroneous, suggesting that a review within the framework of their constitution would be the appropriate avenue.

Mumba also urged against involving external parties, such as Zambia or its President Hakainde Hichilema, in this process, stressing the importance of following established legal procedures.

In response to Mumba's statements, Zanu PF spokesperson Christopher Mutsvangwa discredited him as an election observer and accused him of overstepping his role by criticizing Zanu PF affiliate Forever Associates Zimbabwe, which was reportedly involved in voter-related threats according to the observer's findings. The situation surrounding the Zimbabwean elections continues to generate debate and scrutiny, highlighting the importance of transparent and fair electoral processes within the SADC region.
